Overview

Practical Urologic Cytopathology provides the essentials for the cytologic diagnosis of disorders of the urinary tract illustrated with approximately 300 color photomicrographs. The text combines the recent with the classic and standard concepts, particularly in the classification of urothelial tumors. Urothelial tumors are covered contrasting the 1973 and 1999 WHO classification and the 1998 WHO/ISUP (World Health Organization/International Society of Urological Pathologists).
The author provides a summary of "key concepts" of each described entity that enhances the practical nature of this book. The book also summarizes the recent developments in the molecular biology and markers for the diagnosis of urothelial tumors and includes chapters on the fine needle aspiration cytopathology of urinary tract masses and on the diagnostic value of urine cytology interpretation. This book is intended for practicing pathologists, pathologists in training, and cytotechnology students as well as researchers and those with special interest in the cytopathology of the urinary tract.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Jay C. Helsel, MD(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: The book provides a comprehensive overview of urologic cytopathology. All realms of disease are covered from neoplastic to reactive to infectious to therapy related conditions.
Purpose: The objective is to provide a comprehensive look at urologic cytopathology. Not only are diagnostic features fully reviewed, the book also provides discussion of the history of urine cytology, the indications and uses of urine cytology, and the use of relevant ancillary techniques. A book of this focus is extremely valuable for those in cytology who routinely deal with urologic specimens. This book gives the cytologist an up-to-date and authoritative source of information about urologic cytology. I must commend Dr. Bardales and his coauthors for this fantastic work. It is a model for how other cytology books should be written.
Audience: The book is written for those in the practice of cytology who interpret specimens from the urologic tract. Most of the book deals with exfoliative aspects but a chapter is also included regarding fine-needle aspirations of the area. The book is also recommended to those in the specialty of urology. An understanding of the diagnostic skills and modalities involved in specimen interpretation will enhance one's effectiveness in obtaining useful diagnostic results. Dr. Bardales is a recognized authority in cytopathology and serves as a section editor in Diagnostic Cytopathology. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and years of experience of interpreting and teaching in urologic pathology.
Features: The book addresses all aspects one needs to cover to be competent in the interpretation of urologic cytopathology. Of particular importance is coverage of normal urinary constituents in the absence of disease. Also well covered are all primary urologic neoplasms with use of the latest World Health Organization classification system. This information is skillfully ported to the cytology setting. The book is written in a clear and concise manner allowing the reader to rapidly find and digest information. The book is also remarkably well illustrated with outstanding color micrographs throughout. The index cites all major headings in the body of the book. Another nice feature is that the book is not overly long and wordy, thus keeping the length to under 300 pages.
Assessment: Overall, this book is of high quality and addresses the needs of cytologists and cytopathologists interpreting urologic cytology specimens. I recommend this book without hesitation and urge those who interpret urinary cytology to keep a copy at their place of work.
