Synopsis
Taking her title from an honorary poem to Russell hailing her "precious fire" as part of the fire of the Chinese revolution, Garner (director of the Women's Center at Florida International U.) details her subject's role in the institutional transformation of the Chinese Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) from an institution formed of the American Progressive Era to a supporter of the Chinese Communist Party. Garner's central concern is the evolution of Russell's social and political thinking during her years in China from 1917 to 1943. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
