Synopsis

This book presents, by means of a number of articles, a survey and a set of projects in computational lexical semantics. The most crucial aspects of ongoing research on predicates are presented: verb semantic classifications, relations between syntax and semantics, Wordnet for Verbs, multilinguism, lexical knowledge bases and lexical acquisition, the generative lexicon.
Predicative Forms in Natural Language and in Lexical Knowledge Bases is designed for professors, researchers and graduate students in the area of language processing and semantics.

Booknews

A dozen papers selected from an August 1996 workshop in Toulouse, France, explore named relations existing between one or more arguments, which in natural languages manifest most frequently as verbs, prepositions, nouns, and adjectives. They look at such core issues in predication as the different lexical semantics approaches for transfer verbs with a particular emphasis on Buy/Sell, the organization of verbs and verb concepts in a semantic net, the analysis and class formation of alternations and verb semantic classes for French, and corpus-based argument identification using a statistically enriched valency machine readable dictionary. Also considers such theoretical perspectives as capturing motion verb generalizations in synchronous tree- adjoining grammar, some syntactic consequences of argument structure dimensions, and the semantics of event-based nominals.
