He takes this book beyond pure "step-by-step," sharing insights into DV workflow and plenty of tips on the program's actual real-world behavior (for example, previews using the QuickTime codec render eight times as fast as those using the program's default Cinepak compressor).
Bolante covers every stage of the DV project, from importing and managing clips to editing them; creating a program; using the Timeline; trimming, transitions, mixing audio, adding effects, and building titles. There's a detailed chapter on superimposing clips in which you'll learn how to fade one image into another, blend images together, and make parts of image transparent, using keys. Especially helpful for beginners, the book offers solid coverage of capturing video -- from whatever source.
At 560 pages, this book's bigger than your typical Visual QuickStart Guide (though the price isn't). Some of the extra pages are dedicated to a detailed review of Premiere's video and audio settings, thus doubling as a basic primer on DV fundamentals: frame rates, frame sizes, compression, audio quality, and their impact on your finished program.
