The annual "Pretty Good Joke" show on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion is an institution of sorts, a rapid-fire dissemination of one-liners, knock-knock jokes, light bulb jokes, and more, dispensed by guest stars like Roy Blount and Paula Poundstone, as well as ordinary citizens. This collection comprises jokes from several shows, with host Keillor--who's a decent joke teller himself--tying it all together. There's nothing brilliant here, but it is, as promised, pretty good. There is an understandably Midwestern center of gravity to this gathering: the jokes "of questionable taste" turn out to be only mildly salacious, and two fundamental humor sources--Jews and blacks--are pretty much absent. For public library humor collections, especially where Keillor is popular.--Norman Oder, "Library Journal" Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
