From The Critics

Reviewer: Holly Gadd, PhD, RN, MSN(Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: This is a reference book for primary care providers that emphasizes collaborative practice in the management of health problems. Guidelines for consultation and referral are a part of patient management for each health problem covered.
Purpose: The complexity of patient management in the current healthcare setting, the need for better communication among various providers, and the goal of high quality care for patients are the basis for this textbook, which focuses on collaborative practice. The editors have taken a concept that is often left at a theoretical level and made it very practical.
Audience: This book is appropriate for primary care students and practitioners at any level, and general or family practice is targeted. The contributors represent multiple disciplines with a broad range of academic and clinical expertise.
Features: Common health problems are discussed by body system, developmental issues from adolescence through adulthood, health maintenance recommendations, and care of office emergencies. Health problems are addressed in a consistent format including a brief description of the problem, pathophysiology clinical presentation, physical exam findings, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, management, complications, patient education, and guidelines for referral/co-management/consultation. Diagnostics, differential diagnosis, pharmacology, and other important guidelines are highlighted in tables. The editors make use of standard algorithms for treatment. Icons are used to highlight emergencies and indications for physician consultation.
Assessment: This book is an excellent reference. When put to use in the clinical setting, information is easy to find, complete, and up-to-date. The textbook compares very favorably to other primary care references such as Dambro's Griffith's 5 Minute Clinical Consult 1999 (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1998). The narrative text format provides more depth of information than Dambro's text. Collaborative management is a feature not found in other references. This text provides a nice balance between too much detail and too little.
