Editorials

B. Peter Sawaya

This is the second edition of an introductory textbook of clinical nephrology. The first edition was published in 1994. The purpose is to provide the reader with a fresh, succinct, and accessible but comprehensive overview of clinical nephrology. A second goal of this book is to help disseminate both existing and newly acquired knowledge in nephrology to the professional community. The objectives of this book are very worthy and the editors have met them. Although there are numerous referenced textbooks in clinical nephrology, very few are targeted at non-nephrologists. The book is written for medical students, house officers, and primary care physicians. More than 80 authors who are considered authorities in the field have contributed to this book. A unique approach of this book is that two independent groups of editors have edited each chapter. This book contains numerous tables, illustrative figures, and outstanding color photographs. The references are pertinent. An outstanding feature of this book is the organization of the chapters in a logical and easy-to-follow manner. The index is comprehensive. The appearance is elegant and reflects great deal of "finesse. This is an outstanding reference on clinical nephrology targeted at physicians in training and busy clinicians. It has many excellent features to make it a true primer. First, chapters are very well organized in a logical and easy-to-find manner. Second, the coverage is succinct yet comprehensive and pertinent. Third, illustrations, tables, and algorithms are clear and easy to follow. Finally, the book focuses on valuable and useful clinical information. This is a must for medical libraries and bookstoresand is highly recommended for primary care physicians, house officers, and students.

This collection of 72 chapters reviews the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of kidney disease, fluid and electrolyte disorders, hypertension, dialysis, and renal transplantation. The third edition adds discussion of the genetic and molecular base of renal tubular transport disorders, and replaces one-third of the chapters with new contributions. Annotation c. From The Critics

Reviewer: Jens Goebel, MD(Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center)
Description: This fourth edition of the National Kidney Foundation's primer is a wonderful, up-to-date compendium of all important aspects of nephrology, written and edited by paramount authorities in the field. Its predecessor was published in 2001.
Purpose: The book's worthy purpose is to be a comprehensive but accessible source of information on the pathophysiology and treatment of kidney diseases and electrolyte disorders. This objective is met in an astounding fashion.
Audience: This is written for medical students, house officers, nephrology fellows, and practicing physicians who will enjoy it tremendously.
Features: This is a comprehensive yet concise overview of all significant aspects of kidney disease. It is beautifully prepared, now with many color illustrations, photos and tables. Moreover, throughout the book, the National Kidney Foundation's K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines have been adopted.
Assessment: The primer remains my favorite nephrology text for non-nephrologists! It should be on the shelves of practitioners, in the libraries of internal medicine residency programs, and in medical school libraries. It compares favorably with the handbook series (nephrology/hypertension, dialysis, transplantation) and other paperback compendiums of the field, especially in its current and clearly justified edition.
