Description: This book on experimental phonetics contains chapters in four major sections (speech production, the speech signal, speech perception and research techniques), skillfully presented by recognized experts in the field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide comprehensive coverage of contemporary topics and important issues in experimental phonetics. The author further hopes that the reader's understanding of the topics will lead to the clinical application of normative data and the study of unresolved issues. This is a well integrated, comprehensive book that makes a nice contribution to the field and appears to meet the author's objectives.
Audience: The book is written for graduate students and professionals in speech-language pathology, audiology, speech, language and hearing science, psychology, the cognitive sciences and linguistics. In addition, this book is a valuable resource for researchers in the area of speech production and speech perception. The contributors are well-established teachers, researchers, and recognized experts in their fields of study.
Features: The book is well illustrated with clarifying figures and tables. Each chapter includes numerous references from the classic through the current works. The table of contents and index adequately directs the reader. Each chapter is tightly organized. Unique features of each chapter include a user-friendly outline and list of key words. Terms are presented in bold-face type within the text and appear in a glossary at the end of the volume. Review questions are included at the end of each chapter, along with suggested readings on subtopics discussed in the chapter.
