Booknews

The third in a series about probiotics considers how the body reacts to the presence of orally administered microorganisms, normally lactic acid bacteria. The responses may be in the form of antibodies, cytokines, killer cells, or macrophage activity, and the contributors investigate such questions as whether the responses result in antagonism of the stimulating bacteria, whether they affect the composition of the indigenous gut microflora, and whether they are sufficiently strong to kill bacterial pathogens or tumor cells. They do not have answers to all the questions, but hope that further research into immune stimulation by probiotic organisms will open up the technique for use as a treatment both for intestinal diseases and for infections outside the gastrointestinal tract. The first two volumes considered the scientific basis and the practical applications of probiotics. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
