Overview

This is the proceedings of the fifth in a series of symposia bringing together engineers and researchers from industry, academia, and national laboratories working in areas related to the processing, fabrication, and characterization of advanced materials. The papers cover a broad spectrum of topics and include discussion of the potential viability and far-reaching applications of new and different processing techniques for advanced materials and potential areas for future research.

This volume contains the papers presented at the fifth Symposium on the Processing and Fabrication of Advanced Materials held in Cincinnati, Ohio in October 1996. The seven- session symposium was sponsored by the Structural Materials Division of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS). The 73 papers presented at the symposium are divided into sessions that included metallics; metal-matrix composites (I and II); intermetallics and polymeric materials; coatings, surfaces, and thin films; and Ceramics (I and II). Some topics include design and specifications of aluminum airframe structural casting; processing and fracture behavior of SiC/alloy composites; superplastic deformation properties of high-formability titanium-matrix composite; the effect of milling atmosphere on the mechanical alloying of titanium aluminide powder; solution and sol-gel methods of coating fiber tows; enhancing the potential of high-temperature ceramics by active brazing and diffusion brazing; and ultrahigh pressure hot pressing of diamond fine particles coated with silicon by a PVD. B&w illustrations. Lacks a subject index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
