Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Pamela R. Jeffries, DNS, MNS, BSN(Indiana University School of Nursing)Description: This is a book for nurses encouraging them to be advocates for nurses and nursing. It humorously discusses problems of nurses ranging from burnout, to productivity, to facing responsibilities. Additionally, the author teaches concepts of negotiation, success, goal orientation, political involvement, among others. The third edition contains 11 chapters that are witty and humorously written.
Purpose: The book provokes thought and incites action for nurses. Topics covered in the text are reality-based and often are topics that may stunt the growth of nursing professionals if they are not dealt with properly.
Audience: The audience is nurses: real world nurses, working in the trenches and struggling to make sense of nursing's nonsense.
Features: Illustrations inserted at the beginning of every chapter are witty, humorous, and applicable to the chapter. Additionally, metaphors or quotations used to introduce a chapter catch the reader's attention for the next topic. References are cited appropriately and are current resources. The book is soft cover, easy to read, and a good size to carry. The front cover only contains bold print β perhaps a humorous, clever picture could be included on the front.
Assessment: This is a well-written, humorous book with substance for nurses confronted with problems of reality when working as a nurse in any arena of nursing. The reading is light and applicable to many situations and circumstances in nursing. This third edition offers updated information on issues and trends currently confronting nurses. I found the book useful and would recommend it to other working nurses. Individuals will probably buy the book for their own library.
