This is a soft-cover compilation of concise and useful summaries of each topic in psychology. The eighteen contributors are all acknowledged and prominent experts in their particular subject matter. This volume is intended to be an overview of the field of psychology particularly as it is applicable to psychiatric practice. The editors also acknowledge the intended usefulness for psychiatric trainees in England who are preparing for the MRCPsych Part 1 examination (roughly the equivalent of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's Part 1 written examination for board certification). The primary intended audience is psychiatrists in training but this book is also likely to be useful to other mental health professionals and educators. The book is divided into three general sections: basic psychology, human development, and social psychology. In the basic psychology section are included such topics as learning theory, sensation and perception, memory, cognition, personality, and motivation. Each chapter begins with a useful outline of key concepts and contains tables and diagrams and a brief, but helpful, bibliography for additional suggested reading. This volume is an extremely successful overview of the field of psychology and the scientific basis for concepts that directly or indirectly influence the clinical practice of psychiatry.
