Overview

Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of interactions among behavioral, neural and endocrine, and immunologic processes of adaptation. These two volumes provide a clearly written, extensively referenced summary of some of the behavioral, neural and endocrine regulators of immune responses and immunologically mediated disease processes and of the behavioral and neuroendocrine effects of immune system activity. Several chapters expand upon topics reviewed in earlier editions of this series; most chapters cover active areas of research that have not previously been reviewed. As illustrated in this fourth edition, interdisciplinary research continues to provide evidence that the brain and immune system represent a single, integrated system of defense.

* Fully revised and updated fourth edition of the classic reference
* Provides a neuroendocrine and immunologic perspective for the behavioral scientist
* Provides a behavioral and neuroscience perspective for the immunologist
* Helps the reader translate basic science findings into clinically relevant information
* Provides the reader with the background for and foundation of integrative research and integrative medicine
* Provides an encyclopedic resource for advanced undergraduates and for pre- and post-doctoral students as well as active researchers

Audience: *Psychologists studying behavior-neuroendocrine-immune interactions *Neuroscientists studying brain-immune system interactions *Endocrinologists studying neuroendocrine-immune interactions *Immunologists studying neuroendocrine-immune interactions *Immunologists studying immunoregulatory processes *Psychiatrists and psychologists researching the experimental foundations of psychosomatic relationships *Physicians and biomedical scientists studying brain-behavior-immune system interactions in the pathogenesis of disease *Pre- and postdoctoral students in psychology, the neurosciences (e.g., neuroendocrinology, neurochemistry, neuroanatomy), microbiology and immunology, endocrinology, physiology, and pharmacology.

Booknews

The field addresses the relationships between the brain and the immune system and their implications for health and disease, and it has grown substantially since the 1981 publication of the first edition of this reference (with 17 papers) and the second edition ten years later. Here this many-faceted subject is addressed in 67 contributions contained in two volumes; much, of course, is new. After a foreword discussing cytokines as mediators of central and peripheral immune- neuroendocrine interactions, coverage encompasses a wide range of topics connected with immunity, among them: age-related phenomena, marijuana, melatonin, biological rhythms, the blood-brain barrier, diseases of the adult central nervous system, sleep, fever, hypnosis, conditioning, stress, social interactions, schizophrenia, depression, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, the menstrual cycle, HIV infection, wound healing, periodontal disease, alcoholism, and the list goes on. Editor Ader is affiliated with the U. of Rochester Medical Center, as is co-editor Nicholas Cohen; the third editor, David L. Felten and is with the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Contributors are from everywhere. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
