Overview

In this book, a group of distinguished contributors review the epidemiology, biological basis, and current treatments of panic disorder. Particular emphasis is given to new findings on the co-morbidity of panic, especially with depression. The most up-to-date information on the biochemical events involved in the provocation of panic attacks is presented, and the roles of serotonin, cholecystokinin, GABA, and noradrenalin are examined in detail. This knowledge opens up possibilities for novel treatments for panic disorder, and their potential is assessed by the contributors. It is only relatively recently that panic has been classified as a distinct psychiatric disorder and it now appears in the International Classification of Disease in ICD10.

This book contains black-and-white illustrations.
