Purpose: According to the authors, the book "bridges the gap between the information contained in large, comprehensive psychiatric nursing texts and the information needed to function effectively in a variety of healthcare settings. The clinician can refer to this book to find the information to effectively handle specific patient problems. The nursing student can use this book as a review of basic psychosocial information that will be useful throughout nursing school curriculum." The book is a wonderful adjunct to the existing texts and it does meet the authors' objectives.
Audience: The book is written for clinicians in any practice setting and for nursing students. The authors are credible authorities.
Features: There are some chapters devoted to reviewing basic psychosocial skills such as communication skills and crisis intervention. There are many chapters presenting specific mental health problems that any patient may experience such as anxiety, anger, depression, and grief. Each chapter devoted to specific patient problems contains a nursing management section that follows the nursing process format. In addition, these chapters contain information about patient and family education, community-based care, life span issues, charting tips, possible nurse reactions and a section titled "When to Call For Help." The tables are helpful in concisely presenting information that is discussed in the text.
Assessment: This book is ideally suited for nurses and students who work in any practice setting and care for patients experiencing common psychosocial needs. This book does not replace a textbook, but it is a wonderful adjunct. It is a concise reference that helps the reader obtain information quickly.

Gorman, Marcia Raines and Linda Sultan combine years of experience working as staff nurses, clinical nurse specialists, educators and managers in writing this guide for practicing clinicians and nursing students. The text covers common psychosocial and psychiatric problems than can coincide with patients' medical problems, and provides guidelines for quick and effective intervention for the safety of both the patient and the caregiver. A general overview is followed by chapters on specific types of problems, such as anxiety, anger, affect and mood, confusion, psychotic thought processes, relating to others, substance abuse, sexual dysfunction, pain, nutrition, the family, spiritual distress, and management of special populations.
