Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Jeffrey Rado, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This user-friendly handbook is ideal for busy clinicians on the psychiatry consult-liaison service. It is clearly written and covers most of the key topics at the interface between medicine and psychiatry. The first edition was published in 2003.
Purpose:The purpose is to serve as a guide to psychiatrists who work with medically and surgically ill patients.
Audience:Practicing psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and psychologists are the intended audience. Psychiatric residents, medical students, psychology interns, and internal medicine residents would also find it useful.
Features:The book provides a systematic review of the psychological care of patients with a variety of medical illnesses and discusses psychiatric aspects of specific nonpsychiatric diagnoses. It is concisely written and each chapter starts with an "Essential Concepts" section that outlines key points. Case vignettes in each chapter also bring the concepts to life. The psychonephrology and psycho-oncology sections are particularly well done. The book focuses on the consult-liaison setting and it also might be useful to discuss these concepts in other settings (i.e. outpatient). It will not provide enough depth for readers who need to more thoroughly research a topic. It also might have been useful to include more specifics of management of the diagnoses commonly seen in clinical settings.
Assessment:Overall, this is a good, quick reference for busy clinicians. It compares well with other books in the field and would be a welcome addition to any library. Any busy clinician who works with the medically ill will find it useful. The last edition was published six years ago, warranting this update.
