Synopsis
The editors (Planta Piloto de Procesos Industriales Microbiológicos, National Council for Science and Technology, Argentina) present 52 papers detailing laboratory techniques for investigating microorganisms pathogenic to humans. Sections on bacterial and viral pathogens include discussion of PCR methods of gene identification, molecular based identification, and other identification and detection methods. Other papers look at fungi, considering such topics as computerized analysis and typing, isolation in foods, and determination of toxins. A range of other types of pathogens is examined, including amoebae and yeasts. A significant number of papers discuss production of bacteriocins and other inhibitors. The use of mice in the study of pathogens and other special methods of analysis are considered in the final two sections. Annotation © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
