Synopsis
factories and palm trees, skyscrapers and remote mountain towns, universities and tropical rain forests. It is cars, coral, cliffs, and caves. Puerto Rico has been dominated by outsiders for centuries, ruled first by Spain, then by the United States. Though many Puerto Ricans are proud to be U.S. citizens, some have not given up the dream of having an independent country.
Children's Literature
Up-to-date material for the social studies curriculum is always in demand so that teachers and students have access to accurate and timely information. As part of the series "Celebrate the States," this title should prove to be useful. Five chapters cover geography, history, government, economy as well as the life and culture of the varied population. The sixth chapter provides interesting information for a tour of the island's attractions. These include El Yunque, a tropical rainforest; the capital city, San Juan, a drive on the Panoramic Route and the Arecibo Observatory that is home to the world's largest radio telescope. Many maps, charts and beautiful, colored photographs supply additional information. A section titled Commonwealth Survey contains a wealth of topics. Among them are a timeline, a list of annual celebrations, the island's official anthem, brief biographies of famous Puerto Ricans and some unusual facts, such as: the special flavorings for both Pepsi and Coca-Cola are manufactured in the town of Cidra. Additional pages include an index, a bibliography and websites. Consider for purchase if new material is needed. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
