Did you know that puppies do not open their eyes until they are about ten days old? Also, even though newborn puppies cannot hear, they hear better when grown than humans do. This simple book lets the reader know how to take care of their new puppy. Information that includes tail wagging, feeding the puppy, brushing it, and watching when it growls are just some of the things the young reader will learn. Readers will enjoy seeing the cute, adorable pictures of the puppies on every other page. This book is plainly written for the young reader to understand. There is a glossary in the back to help with terms that might be difficult. Also included in the book is a web site to go to for further information. This book would be useful in the classroom when talking about animals in stories or science. This book is part of the "Let's Read About Pets" series. 2004, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 3 to 7.β Cathi I. White

Gr 1-3-Brief introductions to pets for beginning readers. Each book combines a few important facts about the featured animal, including behavior and what a first-time owner might need to know about feeding and basic care. A full-page, color photo faces a few lines of large-print, upbeat text. However, Rabbits might offer some challenges to children. They are told that rabbits eat food "in pellets." The word is not explained in context but is included in the glossary. Additionally, although rabbits with droopy ears may well be referred to as "lops," the actual name for this breed is lop-ear rabbit. Adequate titles for emergent readers.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.Book Details
