Overview

Qualitative Research in Nursing: Advancing the Humanistic Imperative presents the essentials of qualitative inquiry as applied to nursing. All commonly employed approaches and methods are covered, as are a number of new generation approaches, along with a sound philosophical and methodological framework for each. Understanding is enhanced by the book's format of examining each approach within a discrete chapter, which is immediately followed by a related chapter containing research reports illustrating the application of the approach in three distinct areas: nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing administration. Significantly, while the book presents the nuts and bolts of conducting and analyzing qualitative research, it does so within a context best described as humanistic and holistic. Insight and intuitive knowledge, rather than statistics alone, are the objectives of this unique and much-needed work.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

An absolute must for all graduate level nursing students, this book systematically explains a wide range of qualitative research approaches, including triangulation:building a sound foundation for comprehension and application. Two chapters are devoted to each method; one for introduction, the second for application. Readers benefit from step-by-step instructions on implementation, critiquing guidelines, and examples of each qualitative research method as it's applied to nursing education, nursing administration, and nursing practice using published research. Approaches covered include phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, historical research, and action research. New in this edition: action research; triangulation; and expansion on ethical issues; phenomenology research; and the conduct of qualitative research.
