Overview

This latest edition of this best-selling textbook has been completely updated to accommodate the needs of users of SPSS Release 10 for Windows. As with previous editions, Alan Bryman and Duncan Cramer provide a non-technical approach to quantitative data analysis and a user-friendly introduction to the widely used SPSS for Windows. They assume no previous familiarity with either statistics or computing, but take readers step-by-step through techniques, including:
* Correlation
* Simple and multiple regression
* Multivariate analysis of variance and covariance
* Factor analysis They also include a comprehensive range of exercises for further practice and cover issues such as sampling, statistical significance, conceptualisation and measurement and the selection of appropriate tests.

Synopsis

The latest edition of this best-selling textbook has been completely updated to accommodate the needs of users of SPSS Release 10 for Windows. As with previous editions, Alan Bryman and Duncan Cramer provide a non-technical approach to quantitative data analysis and a user-friendly introduction to the widely used SPSS for Windows software package. They assume no previous familiarity with either statistics or computing, but take readers step-by-step through techniques, including: Univariate analysis (frequency tables, measures of central tendency and dispersion, histograms, etc.); Bivariate analysis (contingency tables, correlation, simple regression, analysis of variance, nonparametric tests); Multivariate analysis (multiple regression, path analysis, multivariate analysis of variance and covariance, factor analysis);

Quantitative Data Analysis with SPSS Release 10 for Windows also includes a comprehensive range of exercises for further practice and cover issues such as sampling, statistical significance, conceptualization and measurement, and the selection of appropriate tests. Questions posed at the end of each chapter allow students to reflect upon what they have learned.

Reviewer:Debra Ann Krummel, BS, MS, PhD(West Virginia University)
Description:This, is an excellent resource for beginning SPSS users. Key features include the prominent use of figures and illustrations including dialog boxes and syntax sequences and numerous data sets with step-by-step analyses and interpretation.
Purpose:The purpose is to introduce students to statistical techniques and skills without reliance on mathematical computations which are embedded in SPSS software. This meets the needs of many students who need to learn the process more than the mechanics. The authors have met their objectives with great success.
Audience:The target audience could be both students and practitioners as well as any novice user of SPSS. I can see the audience expanding beyond students in psychology and sociology to include health education and other related disciplines. The authors are well qualified to write the book and its many versions.
Features:The book covers not only preliminary steps in data analysis (importing, setting up data, recoding variables), but also the main statistical tests used in the social sciences. Outstanding features of the book are the figures and boxes, syntax sequences, sample problems, and interpretative comments.
Assessment:The quality of this book is outstanding. While there are other books on the use of SPSS, I like the simple and illustrative format of this book which I believe students will find very helpful. We will use this book in my lab. Because this book uses SPSS 10, it is a necessary replacement for previous editions.

Editorials

From the Publisher

... provides a step-by-step guide to the main quantitative analyses used by social scientists, and takes the reader from the basics to the more operational level ... the style of the text, the content, and the general user-friendly nature, will make it a very useful companion to students and researchers ... - Tom Hefferenan, University of Northumbria

Bryman and Cramer's text has become an essential reference, since it contains more detail than any of the SPSS manuals, and comes with sizeable data sets and relevant sociological and psychological examples to illustrate the concepts it describes. - David Giles, Coventry University
