Library Journal

Queen Victoria long has been a popular subject for biographers, and the literary industry focusing on her life shows no sign of diminution. This work is one of the better recent treatments, and it comes from an author who has written extensively on both the Victorian era and royalty. Intended for a wide audience, it reads pleasantly and is reasonably well researched in the admittedly limited range offered by books. Undergraduates or general readers having little familiarity with the woman and her milieu will find the book particularly useful, but it in no sense supersedes Lady Longford's Victoria R.I. (1964) or Cecil Woodham-Smith's Queen Victoria (1972). Recommended for public libraries and undergraduate collections.-- Jim Casada, Winthrop Coll., Rock Hill, S.C.
