Description:This is a "nuts-and-bolts book that covers the basics in wound care from A to Z" (although it is not organized alphabetically). Twelve pages of color photographs are presented in the introduction, but only black-and-white photos and illustrations are found in the body of the text. Case studies, patient teaching, and tips are included frequently.
Purpose:The main purpose of this book is to provide health care professionals with information that is easy to use, so they can provide optimal wound care in the most cost-effective manner." This worthy objective is met.
Audience:Parts of this book are specific to students or practitioners new to wound care but the greatest use will be by nurses practicing in an area requiring frequent wound care and patient teaching. The authors have academic degrees and clinical expertise in the area of wound care.
Features:This four part book begins with assessment and documentation, includes a section on the basics of wound management and specific types of wounds/ulcers, and ends with home health and long term care issues. Much of the information is presented in tables, exhibits, and lists. The black-and-white pictures are surprisingly detailed, although color would increase interest and learning. The index and table of contents are complete and useful.
Assessment:I have reviewed several wound care books recently and I like this one. It does not rely too heavily on specific product information and deals more with principles and concepts. I like its concise format. The references and resource information at the end of each chapter are good. Color pictures throughout would be an improvement.
