A well-known British artist, quiltmaker, and teacher whose quilts are featured in museums and private collections around the world, Burbidge here presents a series of workshops that give aspiring quiltmakers the opportunity to study techniques and design principles she has developed over a quarter century. First, she presents guided exercises in the four basic quiltmaking techniques: pieced patchwork, appliqu , quilting, and fabric dyeing and painting. Then she moves to the meat of the book--the design process--with workshops on designing for strip piecing, color, geometric 3-D design, repeat pattern designing, and paper/fabric collage. Some 160 full-color photos and hundreds of line drawings add to the feeling that one is actually studying in her studio. This would be an excellent textbook for studio art classes in quiltmaking. Quilt Studio is organized as part of a twopart series of workshops and provides a source of design and quilt making options which include steps basic to both pieced and appliqued quilts by machine and by hand. Workshops in Part 2 outline how to build on these techniques to make customized quilts. Quilt Studio is an excellent introduction for all skills levels.
