VOYA

These series entries about the media include a definition, history, work descriptions, process illustrations, message delivery examples, careers, each medium's place in society, and its possible future. Radio describes types of radio stations and programs, and Photography describes photography fields. The broad range of topics covered in each volume produces a shallow, generally stated text limited further by large print and uninteresting colored photos. The same overall media description and photograph introduce each volume. "From Idea to Photograph" in Photography and "From Idea to Program" in Radio employ three case studies that give a general overview of three types of production, but the format, which includes all three studies coded in separate colored sections within each step, is somewhat confusing. The Radio case studies total five paragraphs each. Each Photography case study employs six paragraphs. Words bolded in the text are explained in the glossary, but most terms will be familiar to teen readers who have only a casual acquaintance with either medium. Message analysis is almost completely ignored. The other four books in the series are Newspapers, Film and Television, Internet, and Magazines. (The Media). VOYA CODES: 2Q 2P M (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8). 2005, Chelsea House/Infobase Publishing, 32p.; Glossary. Index. Photos., PLB . Ages 11 to 14.
