Overview

The purpose of this textbook is to convey a working knowledge of radiologic physics, and to prepare radiography students for the certification exam by the ARRT. The textbook also provides a standard of knowledge from which practicing radiographers can make decisions about technical factors and diagnostic image quality in the work place. This edition gives an expanded coverage of quality management, which includes all of the content on the ARRT. It also includes coverage of new cardiovascular interventional equipment and recent advances in spiral CT and digital radiography. The text keeps students informed and up to date with respect to professional standards and requirements.

This full-color textbook provides a solid presentation of radiologic science including the fundamentals of radiologic physics to prepare students for the ARRT certification exam. Also provided is a standard of knowledge from which practicing radiographers can make decisions about technical factors and diagnostic image quality in the work place. Key concepts are pulled highlighted in boxes, alerting students to need-to-know information. This edition includes new and expanded coverage of fluoroscopy, cardiovascular and interventional radiology, digital x-ray imaging, mammography, and multislice spiral CT.

Description: This radiologic technology physics book covers fundamental physics and radiologic physics. This is the seventh edition of book last published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose of the book, according to the author, is threefold: to convey a working knowledge of radiologic physics, to prepare radiography students for the ARRT certification examination, and to provide a base of knowledge from which practicing radiographers can make informed decisions about technical factors and diagnostic image quality. The objectives are worthy, but I would have liked to have seen an additional objective of preparing radiographers for the future of digital imaging. The author has met his objectives.
Audience: The book is written for student radiographers and practicing radiographers. The author is a credible authority in radiologic physics.
Features: The book begins with a review of fundamental physics concepts and moves into radiologic physics. Each chapter includes objectives, a chapter overview, and a chapter summary and ends with a set of review questions. Mathematical concepts and key ideas are represented with their own unique icon and are placed in colored boxes.
Assessment: The book covers fundamental physics and basic radiologic physics very nicely. I'm not sure that a new edition is warranted based on the minimal amount of material that was added. This edition should have seen a huge increase in the amount of material on computed radiography and digital radiography. The charge coupling device discussion is adequate, but could have been mentioned in multiple chapters, not just in the interventional unit. Based on rapidly changing technology, the computed radiography section could have been greatly expanded to include discussion on histograms, phosphor plates etc. Kodak has several computer based training programs that cover the fundamentals of digital imaging in-depth and provide a great overview of CR and DR. The inclusion of multislice spiral CT is good, but once again I would have liked more information on the materials that will directly effect the practicing radiographer in the very near future.
