This first-rate account of the Black Panthers was originally published in 1971. (Aug.)

Library Journal

Journalist Moore chronicled the Black Panthers on assignment for LIFE magazine and later published his findings as A Special Rage in 1971. The result was ``a sensitive yet objective study'' ( LJ 5/1/71). Moore provides a firsthand look at the Panthers' leaders and philosophy, concluding that they were ``in the mainstream of American historical tradition like Hancock, Adams, and Paine.'' This edition contains an introduction and afterword by scholar Michael Thelwell, who explains the Panthers' significance and tells what happened to their leaders since 1971.
