Synopsis
This is where it begins. The showdown for Halla. At stake is nothing less than all that ever was and all that will be. While Bobby remains trapped on Ibara, the battle moves to his home territory: Second Earth. Mark Dimond and Courtney Chetwynde are left on their own to defend Second Earth against the forces of Saint Dane. The Convergence has broken down the walls. The territories are on a collision course. The final phase of Saint Dane’s quest to rule Halla is underway. And Bobby Pendragon is nowhere to be found.
Children's Literature
With Bobby Pendragon, First Traveler of the universe of Halla, marooned on the island of Ibara, much of Book Nine revolves around his old friends Mark and Courtney. They have returned to Second Earth to find a disconcerting change: the fascistic cult of "Ravinia" has sprung up from seemingly nowhere. A little dangerous research proves its figurehead, Naymeer, is a lackey of the arch villain Saint Dane. As Saint Dane's long promised "Convergence" gets into gear, the remaining TravelersAlder, Patrick, and Bobby himselfgather on Second Earth in a final no-holds-barred attempt to stop the movement before the future of Halla is destroyed. As MacHale points out, this is the "penultimate" book of his Pendragon series. Only one more volume, folks. How MacHale plans to sufficiently regenerate his good guys in time to save the universe in a mere 500-odd final pages should prove interesting to watch. In the meantime, Book Nine contains enough action to keep the faithful followers of the series from dwelling too long on their heroes' and heroine's blatant errors of judgment that consistently compound the chaos Saint Dane is gleefully creating.
