Overview
Sharp (English, Lingnan U, Hong Kong) examines from a psychological perspective the layered series of processes to extract meaning that comprises reading comprehension, and considers the effect of cultural predilections on meaning. Drawing on experiments he conducted in the Chinese cultural setting of Hong Kong, he argues for the importance of the structure of a text in the process of reading. He found that expository text organized into different forms, such as problem- solution, cause-effect, comparison, or description, have different effects on comprehension independent of the text's content. The text is double spaced. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, ORBook Details
