Synopsis

Reading in America: A Progress Report offers a study of reading in America. Contemporary research indicates that competent readers are constructive; the volume studies the reading habits of adults and children, and includes data on 17-year-olds from the National Assessment of Educational Progress using reading instruction, reader response theory, and reading assessment. The monograph concludes with recommendations based on contemporary research: (1) teachers need to be empowered to continue to do the jobs they are doing; (2) the definition of the concept of "being literate" should be widened; (3) wide, self-selected, independent reading must be a prominent objective in reading instruction; and (4) the needs of all students must be met as society becomes increasingly more diverse. Three figures of data and a list of publications by the authors are attached.
