Synopsis

This collection of essays examines historical aspects of the complex relationship of country, city and capital from the mid-18th century when landscape representations formed part of the ideological setting for the passage from rural to metropolitan capitalism, in relation to a number of landscape modes from Turner and Constable to the recent Garden Festivals. The essays cover painting, photography, popular culture, architecture, town and country planning and contributors include Stephen Bann, John Barrell, Stephen Daniels, Fred Inglis, Marcia Pointon, David Solkin and Raymond Williams.
