The question that diverts us all is first presented in the toddler years when the mastery of getting dressed is a triumph and opinions about clothing are emphatic. These four board books illustrated by collage-artist Marthe Jocelyn are a unique tribute to the colors, textures, and patterns that make clothes a childβs favorite pastime.

What am I going to wear? The question that diverts us all is first presented in the toddler years when the mastery of getting dressed is a triumph and opinions about clothing are emphatic.
These four board books illustrated by collage-artist Marthe Jocelyn are a unique tribute to the colors, textures, and patterns that make clothes a child’s favorite pastime.
Ready for Winter displays a full wardrobe, introducing lovely words like turtleneck and galoshes, and allowing even the very young reader to be an expert on what should be worn next season.
Children's Literature
Somehow I was not expecting a board book about winter to be filled with pictures of clothing. It starts by telling young listeners to take off their pajamas and select the proper clothing for this time of year. Since it is cold, options include long underwear, a turtleneck shirt, tights, socks, boots, snowsuit, mittens, hat, and a scarf. After all, winter days can be quite chilly. Now these two kids on the last spread are set for whatever winter might bring, especially snow that can be made into a snowman. Jocelyn has created a simple lesson in learning the various pieces of clothing that kids would normally wear, but the illustrations are the real treat. They consist of fabric and paper to make attractive collages, and the children depicted include a boy and a girl. Other books in the series address the remaining seasons. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS- These board books all begin with the fill-in sentences, "Let's get ready for...! Take off pajamas and choose...." The pages that follow show articles of clothing children might wear during the given season, such as "jeans" in autumn and "rain boots" in spring; the closing sentence states, "Now we're ready for...!" (summer, etc.). Joyful youngsters are depicted on the covers and in the final pages. As in Jocelyn's Mayfly (Tundra, 2004), the folksy collage illustrations clearly show different textures against patterned backgrounds. Children will be familiar with the items of clothing, and the colors and backgrounds reflect the seasons. These books are sedate companions to Kit Allen's Swimsuit, Galoshes, Longjohns , and Sweater (all Houghton, 2003).-Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK
