Reviewer:Josie M. Bowman, DSN, RN(East Carolina University )
Description:This book starts with a discussion about the foundation of plastic surgery -- the history and clinical framework. In the preface, the authors indicate that a strong component of plastic surgery nursing is wound care/management which is discussed in a variety of aspects. The book covers the surgical process and nursing care of each type.
Purpose:The purpose is to "convey a framework" to be used by nurses in caring for clients undergoing plastic surgery and "contribute the 'best practice' clinical and patient outcomes." This is a worthy objective and necessary in the development of evidence-based nursing practice.
Audience:According to the authors, the book is written for nurses in all levels of practice. They state there may not be much new for experienced nurses, but for inexperienced nurses, the book provides a framework. The authors are both RNs, one certified in plastic surgery, one a research associate and manager of the Wound Foundation of Australia. The book is too complex for student nurses.
Features:The book presents a detailed discussion of all aspects of care of clients receiving plastic surgery. The authors discuss pre- and post- operative preparation and teaching for clients undergoing skin grafts, micro surgery, flaps, hand, reconstructive craniofacial surgery, and cosmetic surgical procedures. Included are numerous diagrams and picture illustrations of different procedures. Important aspects are highlighted in grey boxes with black headings.
Assessment:This high quality book covers many aspects and types of plastic surgical procedures. While exact procedures may vary among surgeons and institutions, the overall premise and scientific basis should be the same.
