Gr 4-7This series illustrates how science and scientific principles are utilized in everyday life. Each book features two-page spreads that address a different aspect of the given topic. After a brief description of how the ear works, Music examines various musical instruments and recording devices. Recreation looks at how science is used in leisure activities, including theme-park rides, backpacking and camping equipment, computer games, television, scuba diving, and hang gliding. Sports covers subjects such as the design of equipment, protective clothing, sports injuries, and the different surfaces used for athletics. None of the concepts discussed in these books requires an advanced understanding of science, as simple ideas are addressed with simple explanations. While individual topics are neatly explained, the connection to the underlying scientific idea is not always clearly made. Boxed inserts containing various bits of trivia, full-color photos, and labeled diagrams are sprinkled throughout the texts. Although the information is too sketchy for reports, these titles may entice readers who have not developed an interest in science.Allison Trent Bernstein, Blake Middle School, Medfield, MA
