Children's Literature -
Part of the series "A Great Idea," which conveys techniques to limit environmental damage, this book focuses on ways to recycle used rubber tires. The book begins dramatically with the description of a devastating fire in a tire dump. Through stories and descriptions of the work of key individuals, it explains the process for manufacturing tires, technical problems with dumping and trying to recycle them, a preferred method for doing so, called "crumb rubber," and prognoses for future recycling mechanisms. Examples of interest to readers, such as the use of crumb rubber on playgrounds and football fields, make the text appealing to the targeted age group. Interspersed throughout are helpful sidebars and photographs that contain or illustrate technical information and anecdotes. It concludes with a glossary of terms, which are highlighted in the text, and a bibliography for further study. This would be an appropriate book for students assigned to report on tire recycling.
