From The Critics

This annotated bibliography lists more than 1,000 titles that can be used for or with young people, grades K-12. Last published in 1981, it is intended to be used as a buying guide by librarians who work with young people General reference books are listed (e.g., evaluation sources, encyclopedias, and the like), and then subject-specific tools under more than 50 specific topics. Bibliographic citations include price and ISBN and are followed by one- to three-sentence content summaries. These annotations do not note the differences between editions of a book; an older edition of a reference book may suffice in some libraries. In the introduction, the authors give detailed criteria for reference-book selection. Author-title and subject indexes aid access This bibliography is current only as of June_ 1990. This means that many superseded editions are listed and that the many good reference books published in 1991 are missing. Some annotations are also unreliable. Those for general encyclopedias, for instance, do not reflect the current state of these sets This bibliography is a useful checklist for selection, both for public and school libraries, but librarians will need to use it with reviews from professional journals to find books published after the middle of 1990.
