Library Journal
Intended for humanities and social science researchers interested in African studies, this work provides more than 900 annotated bibliographic citations for publications related to continental Africa. The resource is well formatted and organized into three main parts: general sources, subject sources, and indexes (author/title and subject). General sources, or reference works, include bibliographies, indexes, guides, handbooks, encyclopedias, directories, biographical works, government publications, Internet sources, and statistics. Subject sources cover 17 disciplines, from agriculture, ecology, politics, and religion to communications, libraries, folklore, linguistics, visual arts, and women. Typical chapters include overview information, annotated entries with full bibliographic citations, and selected LC subject headings. Some users might expect to see more titles related to specific African countries and regions rather than the continent as a whole, but the the continental emphasis is explained in the preface by the compilers, African studies bibliographer Kagan and former bibliographer Scheven of the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, which is known for its African studies collection. Libraries that already own works edited by Scheven (e.g., the award-winning Bibliographies for African Studies, 1987-1993. o.p.) will want to purchase this tool. Recommended for academic collections with interests in Africana.--Elizabeth Connor, Medical Univ. of South Carolina Lib., Charleston
