This practical volume provides an overview of reference services and sources in elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Riedling addresses current issues such as the impact of technology and refers to the most recent AASL guidelines, Information Power. The meat of the book is the "Nuts and Bolts" section on a wide range of reference tools. The lists of basic print and electronic sources are quite complete, as are the comments on evaluation and selection. Professionals new to the field and library-school students will find the succinct information on evaluation in boxed, bulleted lists to be helpful, if somewhat redundant. An extensive appendix of publisher information is included, and scenarios of fairly typical reference situations are offered. A much slimmer and more reader-friendly volume than Richard Bopp and Linda Smith's often-used Reference and Information Services (Libraries Unlimited, 1995), Riedling's work has a more specific audience and is a good supplement to the aforementioned.-Peg Glisson, Mendon Center Elementary School, Pittsford, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
