This book addresses reflux laryngitis: the epidemiology, anatomy, physiology, symptoms, and medical and surgical therapies of this important disease process. It is intended to provide a practical overview of reflux laryngitis and other manifestations of laryngopharyngeal reflux. Because of its high prevalence and wide range of symptoms and sequelae, these objectives are certainly worthy, and the editors more than adequately address these objectives. According to the editors, this book is primarily written for otolaryngologists and anybody who sees significant reflux as a part of his or her practice, including the generalist. In my view the book is geared more toward those who see less reflux in daily practice -- like the generalist. The editors are well known in the field and are excellent authorities. This book is comprehensive in that it addresses all aspects of otolaryngologic reflux. Specifically, this presentation starts with cogent information about epidemiology and extends through the spectra of behavioral, medical, and surgical treatments. These treatment options are particularly well covered. The bibliographies at the end of each chapter are particularly useful tools, especially for otolaryngologists as opposed to generalists. The book is less useful overall to otolaryngologists as it recapitulates well known anatomy, physiology, and treatment options. The goal of providing a concise, comprehensive resource to a variety of specialties about a very common disease process is accomplished. As appropriately underscored, this is the first book ever to focus on otolaryngologic reflux. Still, its greatest utility to an otolaryngologist would be as a quick reference as opposed to amore comprehensive guide, which is more appropriate for the generalist.
