Overview

Are you stocked up for Armageddon? Weigert (sociology, U. of Notre Dame) examines the possibility of an apocalypse, eminent and otherwise, and how humans of various stripes cope with the idea of it happening to them and others like or unlike them. He writes of the increasing focus on the endtimes in some religious communities, and the increasing apprehension about it among secular thinkers. In both cases he finds a sort of entrenchment, a seeking of converts, and elements of exclusivity. Weigert analyzes how what we observe around us can lead us to believe the end is near, by selecting our own transformations of time and identity. Throughout he finds evidence of hope, but differences in its nature, content, and application. Annotation Β©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
