Library Journal

Contemporary critical theories of New Historicism and cultural or historical materialism have considerably altered the course of Renaissance scholarship. Exposing the ideological agenda embedded in the formation of the superstructure, these theories aim at highlighting the base. This anthology joins hands with them by examining the darker side of the Renaissance along with its golden achievements. Edited by two Renaissance scholars from Bucknell University, the anthology includes selections from English Renaissance poetry and prose published or circulated between the accession of Henry VIII in 1509 and the English Civil War of 1641. Along with the works of canonical authors, such as Sidney, Spenser, Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Jonson, this volume also celebrates the works of noncanonical writers, especially women, such as Anne Askew, Elizabeth Cary, Aemilia Lanyer, Martha Moulsworth, Mary Wroth, and Queen Elizabeth I, whose openly subversive writings have, in fact, been very influential. Arranged chronologically, these selections of prose pieces, carols, ballads, songs, and hymns contain introductory notes, suggested readings, and footnotes. Also included are bibliographical references, indexes, and cross references to the Internet resources. Strongly recommended for all libraries.-Aparna Zambare, Central Michigan Univ.
