Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: James Aiman, MD(Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: This comprehensive book provides up-to-date information about all aspects of reproductive medicine. The authors are international in scope and renown.
Purpose: This is intended to be a reference text that "unifies medical and surgical aspects of infertility while applying basic and fundamental principles to clinical situations." This book provides information about all aspects of reproductive endocrinology. This is a worthy objective that is nearly impossible to achieve in a single volume. The authors and editors have achieved their objective to a great extent.
Audience: This book is written for anyone whose clinical practice includes any aspect of reproductive health or disease; obstetricians and gynecologists are the primary target. The editors and authors are eminently qualified experts in their subjects.
Features: Most illustrations are decision-tree diagrams, tables, and graphs. Perhaps there are few photographs to conserve editorial space. The use of glossy paper may have enhanced the reproduction quality of the illustrations. References in all chapters are cited alphabetically, an indication that the editors have dictated a common style. The bibliography is current and extensive. The table of contents and index are thorough and useful to find a desired topic quickly.
Assessment: There is a very short list of authoritative, comprehensive texts in reproductive medicine. One is an elegant discourse on reproductive physiology, and another is a practical, clinical approach to common reproductive disorders. This book provides a superb blend of physiology and clinical reproductive medicine. This is a useful starting point for any clinical disorder in reproduction (infertility, menopause, amenorrhea, etc.) and may often be the only text the practitioner needs.
