Residential Construction Academy: Carpentry

Part of our new Residential Construction Academy series, Carpentry introduces users to skills and information required to work professionally on any job site. Based on nationally-recognized standards set by the construction industry, this handbook is organized into four sections: 'Tools and Materials', 'Rough Carpentry', 'Exterior Finish', and 'Interior Finish'. Extensively illustrated and succinctly written, nearly every chapter contains special 'Procedure' sections that combine precise, step-by-step instructions with helpful drawings, making it easy to master tasks. Safety is emphasized and safety cautions are highlighted throughout. Definitions of industry terms at the start of each chapter, are also included to help facilitate learning. The result of a strategic partnership between the National Association of Home Builder's Home Builders Institute and Delmar Learning, the Residential Construction Academy Series is the perfect way to teach essential workplace skills to people new to the building trades. Ideal for use in vocational programs, workforce development programs, professional associations, and trade unions, all materials are based on industry standards. The Residential Construction Academy also offers credentialing for programs using the skill standards and materials, along with a national registry of students who have successfully completed participating programs. The goal is a workforce that is skilled, knowledgeable, and able to meet the needs of the industry today and well into the future.

Floyd Vogt is a sixth generation carpenter/contractor. He was raised in a family with a small business devoted to all phases of home construction and began working in the family business at age 15. After completing a B.A. in chemistry from the State University of New York College at Oneonta, Mr. Vogt returned to the field as a self-employed remodeler. In 1985, he began teaching at State University of New York at Delhi of Technology in Delhi, New York, www.delhi.edu, in the Carpentry program. He has taught many courses, including Light Framing, Advanced Framing, Math, Energy Efficient Construction, Finish Carpentry, Finish Masonry, and Estimating. Currently, Mr. Vogt is a Professor in Construction Design-Build Management, Bachelors degree program at Delhi. Course responsibilities include Residential Construction, AutoCAD, Construction Seminar and Physical Science Applications. He has served as a carpentry regional coordinator for Skills-USA and post-secondary Skills-USA student advisor. He is currently a member of a local town Planning Board.
