Overview
The June 17, 1953 uprising of against communist rule is the fulcrum of this study of opposition politics in East Germany. Bruce (history, St. Francis Xavier U., Canada) argues that the economic motives frequently posited as the roots of the rebellion fail to fully explain it. He argues that the repression of political rights by the authorities should be seen as one of the prime drivers of resistance and that the goals of the non-Marxist political parties shared a basic commonality with the broader population.
