Reviewer:Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT, AE-C(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description:In its fourth edition, this book continues to teach the basic fundamental principles of mathematics, statistics, chemistry, and physics as they apply to the clinical practice of respiratory therapy. This is an update from the 1996 edition.
Purpose:The book is intended primarily to meet the basic science needs for respiratory therapy programs, but would serve as a solid resource for respiratory therapists as well. This edition meets those objectives.
Audience:It is written primarily for students in respiratory care programs. The author is an expert in his field.
Features:Each chapter starts with an introductory paragraph followed by chapter objectives and accompanying bullet points. Key terms are bolded within the text. Where applicable, a section of formulas follows. Tables, examples, and excellent illustrations are used to promote reader mastery of the material. Objectives covered in the chapter have a corresponding practice problems section. Each chapter ends with a chapter summary with bolded key terms and a review questions section. Oddly, the solutions to the practice problems and answers to the chapter review questions are not found in this book, but in the instructor's manual.
Assessment:This is a no-nonsense, solid textbook for students in respiratory care programs. Biochemical advances in physiology as well as advances in the physics of mechanical ventilation necessitate this and future editions. The author may want to consider adding the step-by-step solutions to the practice problems as well as the answers to the chapter review questions in the next edition of this fine book.

Booknews

This text introduces the core principles and concepts that are most important in the clinical practice of respiratory therapy, including chemistry, physics, mathematics, microbiology, and physiological chemistry. Wojciechowski (cardiorespiratory care, U. of South Alabama, Mobile) uses examples and 500-plus practice problems with answers help apply the basic scientific theories to practical issues, such as calculating airway resistance, graphing static and dynamic compliance curves, and calculating shunt problems.
