From the builder's standpoint, the ideal home site would be level and well drained. As very few sites achieve that ideal, technology must come to the rescue, and retaining walls are one of the best available options. Skinner has collaborated with the National Concrete Masonry Association to write this book, which shows readers how to make walls out of concrete segmental retaining-wall units (essentially specially designed concrete blocks). The book's first half explains the "nuts and bolts" of creating a wall out of these blocks, and the latter half offers a wealth of color photos showing the product in use. There are other ways to make retaining walls, but this is one of the most accessible methods for the average do-it-yourselfer or homeowner. This title should be part of comprehensive collections.
