Essays, most of which were published between 1978 and 1985. Evans writes social, not political history. These essays do not give a coherent picture of 19th (and early 20th) century Germany, but make interesting supplementary reading. Seeing a fundamental conflict between liberalism and authoritarianism, the authors (both in psychology at Duke) propose an escape from society's swings between them. They find the underlying problem in the religious and externalized origin of ethics. Paper edition (unseen), $14.95. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
