Vitamin A, its derivatives, and synthetic analogues, are used to treat a wide range of conditions, from acne to cancer. Unfortunately, at therapeutic levels of dosage, many of them are (like thalidomide) teratogenic; their use entails risks of birth defects, especially during the early stages of unplanned, undiscovered pregnancy. Professionals from a number of medical fields discuss the risks and the benefits of using the drugs. The discussion, addressed to clinicians, ethicists, and basic scientists, may become more pertinent as new, highly effective drugs are also proved to be teratogenic. Annotation c.
