Turbulent emotions govern the lives and thoughts of these Holocaust survivors, not only the camp internees, but also the Nazis living under assumed identities, the seminary student who learns that his real mother was a Jew who surrendered him to a convent to save his life, the combat photographer who has seen too much to resume his prewar activities. The novel follows these characters separately through the war and in the ensuing decade, bringing them together in the unlikely setting of an Arizona cattle ranch, where a former camp commandant receives his just desserts from a group of American Indians whose land he wants. The avenging of evil takes a back seat to feelings and relationships as the primary theme. This, combined with some unusual plot twists, raises an already engrossing novel a cut above the rest.
