Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Charlotte Anne Sadler, MD(University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine)
Description:Grouped by system and then by specialty, this is a review for USMLE Step 2 and a reference for the wards in a tabular format.
Purpose:While some of the information is well suited to the tabular format, not all of it is. The authors meet their objective of presenting this information in this format, but it is not a complete reference for the boards or wards.
Audience:Although the book is intended for medical students studying for USMLE Step 2 and on clinical rotations, the majority of the information is not detailed enough to be of much use to these students. This might be a better resource for physician-assistant or nurse-practitioner students in the primary care setting.
Features:This book covers the basics of systems (ENT, pulmonary, GI, etc.), includes chapters particular to specialties (neurology, pediatrics, dermatology), and chapters on ECG, ACLS, wound care, pharmacology, etc. The chapters address the basics of each topic, in table format with accompanying illustrations. The book is an excellent quick reference for some of the information, such as musculoskeletal diagnostic maneuvers, medication summaries, vaccination tables, lab values, etc. A useful Spanish language section provides basic translation for commonly used medical words. However, the information on more complex topics, such as disease/disease processes is much too basic. Students will need a much more in-depth understanding of these subjects to succeed on the boards or in clinical rotations.
Assessment:This is a great quick reference for simple information, such as lab tests, diagnostic maneuvers, commonly used medications, etc. However, much of the information on disease processes is much too basic and would not be useful for studying for boards or on clinical rotations.
